They provide two services: a SOCKS proxy and a VPN. You generally use one. Use the proxy if you only want BTGuard to handle BitTorrent traffic. Use the VPN if you want all of your traffic to go through BTGuard. Plus, you get the added benefit of encrypting the traffic between you and BTGuard.
